Today,
we were scheduled to have a special lecture with Dr. Chen-Jui Huang at Tunghai
University. Dr. Huang is an Associate Professor in the department of Finance.
He received his BBA at National Taiwan University, M.Sc. in Economics at
University College, University of London and his Ph.D in Economics at the
University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne. He’s been teaching for 10+ years in
International Macroeconomics, Foreign Exchange Market and Financial Institution
Management.
We
discussed the financial markets in Taiwan based on economic fundamentals and
the growth and specifics of the financial system. One of the issues that we
talked about is Taiwan becoming an offshore for China: feeding China with
Taiwan products and service that help the GDP and GNP continue to grow for the
Taiwanese people. Other topics that we talked about were the current exchange,
purchasing power parity, natural unemployment (frictional and structural),
citizen participation (Labor Force / Population) and the demographic dividend
trend (in the future, more people to care for). We absorbed allot of
information about these topics that help me understand that Taiwan is a raising
economic state.

We then
had a brief overview of the Taiwan financial system concerning Financial Asset-Direct
Finance, Financial Asset-Indirect Finance and the Non-financial/Real Asset and
their options. Dr. Huang also covered the Taiwan Structure Change, Individual
Stockholders and the Offshore Market share options for China. The offshore
options was an interesting topic to discuss because we were told about A
Shares, B Shares, H Shares, TDR and Local and international Funds and which
funds from specific countries that they
can be purchased.
After our special lecture, we
took a tour of the Tunghai campus by the chair of the Foreign Language
department. The university was founded by Methodists missionaries in 1955 as
the first private university and the second oldest university in Taiwan.
We saw
the statue of the Chiang Kai-shek in the Assembly Hall. This was a controversial
situation because Kai-shek (depending on who you ask) being a controversial
figure. He was Nationalists Party leader imposed martial law and persecuted people critical of his rule in a period known as the "White Terror."
We walked around the
campus and saw the Tunghai Library, Fine Arts and Creative Design, Management and
Luce Memorial Chapel. The chapel is a Christian chapel and was named in honor
of Rev. Henry Luce, an American missionary and educator in China.

The campus is about 158 acres, 8 colleges with 34
departments boosting 17,000 students. The campus is very spacious with allot of
beautiful scenery and open courtyards. Many of the students that attend Tunghai
University had acquired the educational standard to attend any university in
any large city in Taiwan but they select Tunghai University because of location
and its campus setting.
